Once Upon a Winter Day Scavenger Hunt

I created this printable scavenger hunt based off our new, Winter book; Once Upon a Winter Day. An adorable story about a boy named Milo who goes on an adventure and discovers many wonderful things. Here is the link to the book . Please feel free to download and print the scavenger hunt to do with your little ones this winter!

“Milo wants a story, but his mom is too busy to entertain him. Instead, she encourages him to go out and play in the snow. At first, Milo is disappointed – he doesn’t want to play outside, he wants a story.

But when he starts to follow a trail of mouse-prints, he discovers signs of activity all around, prompting him to ask, “What happened here?” Before long, he’s using his imagination — depicted in lush wordless spreads that capture the vividness of Milo’s fantasies — to fill in the gaps. By the time Milo comes home, he’s the one with stories to tell.

A must have for the winter season, Liza Woodruff’s Once Upon a Winter Day is a fun read-aloud that shares details about animal behaviour from a child’s perspective.”

Guest Bathroom Refresh

When beginning our basement bathroom makeover I started by priming the tile on the walls with the 1-2-3 all-surface Bullseye Prime, twice. Then I painted the tile with Benjamin Moore’s Snowfall White two additional times. It turned out beautifully and made a huge difference in brightening up the bathroom right away! We knew we would be replacing the flooring in the entire basement. It’s a walkout basement and is very large and bright so we opted for a light waterproof laminate from Lowe’s and I am SO pleased! Update:it’s holding up really well!

We received the wallpaper from Rocky Mountain Decals and fell in love immediately. Over Thanksgiving weekend while we were discussing wallpaper with our families we were warned that nothing is harder on a marriage than a wallpaper installation! After we put Sullivan to bed a few nights later we got to work! It was our own stupidity that led to us not realizing that the ceiling wasn’t straight so after applying the first panel we had to remove it and in the process the panel became a wrinkly, sticky mess. My immediate thought was oh my goodness, there’s no way we will be able to salvage this! To my absolute delight, we reapplied it right away and it went on PERFECTLY, which I think is a true testament to how great this product really is! After our first panel mishap, the rest of the installation went SO smoothly. The applicator they provide is super simple and user friendly, the wallpaper wrinkles smooth out beautifully and the edges are easy to trim. The process was quick and painless and the results are OH SO beautiful! I am obsessed with how clean and bright it looks, and check out the crazy before and afters!

We replaced our vanity, also purchased from Lowe’s. This is the one we decided on. We also switching out our lighting for these ones from Amazon.

The towels and accents are from Homesense.

Bathroom Before

Endy 100-Night Review

Sullivan has been in his “big boy” bed for over 100 nights now! He’s delighted to climb into his new bed each night (and each nap) and so are we to tuck him in! We aren’t ones to bring him into our bed unless he’s sick and especially with the arrival of Suede, it’s great to have somewhere to sleep or snuggle with him should he need us. It’s also the most cozy spot for bedtime stories and to cuddle up together before bedtime!

It’s firm enough to feel incredibly safe for him as a toddler and with the addition of bumpers and his Beddy’s bedding, he has a very safe sleep environment which is so important!

Especially while I was pregnant, I found my back was often pinched and I was thankful that laying with Sullivan on our Endy mattress did not aggravate my back! The transition to a big boy bed was a bit of a scary one for us, we worried about him falling out of bed, choosing not to stay in bed, or developing poor sleep habits. We have also utilized the Little Hippo Ready-to-rise clock to help make sure he learns when it is bedtime, and when it is time to wake up. We get to enjoy the fluffy, adjustable pillows each night while tucking him in and we love them! Thanks to Endy, this transition has been great, and we are so thankful that Sullivan loves his new room, and new bed as much as he does!

Boston Cream Donuts

Travis decided he wanted to make Donuts a few weeks back and while the donuts themselves turned out perfectly, there was a mishap with the glaze. On attempt two yesterday, our yeast didn’t activate properly so the donuts didn’t rise! Attempt three (also yesterday) was very successful! With the adaptations we made and have since added, we think they’re pretty perfect! Enjoy!

  • 1 ¼ cups milk
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons (one package) active dry yeast
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted and cooled
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar (use 1TBSP to aid in blooming the yeast and use the rest in the batter)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 ¼ cups all-purpose flour, plus more for rolling out the dough
  • 2 quarts neutral oil, for frying, (we use canola)

  1. Heat the milk until it is warm but not hot, about 90 degrees (approximately 45 seconds-1 minute in the microwave). In a large bowl, add 1 TBSP white sugar and the yeast. Stir lightly, and let sit until the mixture is foamy, about 5 minutes. Note, if it doesn’t bloom/foam like in the photo below, start over or your donuts will not work!
  2. Using your stand mixer with a dough hook, beat the eggs, butter, sugar (1/4 cup minus the 1 TBSP you used in your yeast) and salt into the yeast mixture. Add half of the flour (2 cups plus 2 tablespoons), and mix until combined, then mix in the rest of the flour until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl. Add more flour, about 2 tablespoons at a time, if the dough is too wet. If you’re using an electric mixer, the dough will probably become too thick to beat; when it does, transfer it to a floured surface, and gently knead it until smooth. Grease a large bowl with a little oil or butter. Transfer the dough to the bowl, and cover. Let rise at room temperature until it doubles in size, about 1 hour. If your kitchen is quite cool, put it in the window or somewhere warmer.
  3. Turn the dough out onto a well-floured surface, and roll it to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut out the donuts with a donut cutter, cookie cutters or a drinking glass, flouring the cutters as you go. Knead any scraps together, being careful not to overwork, and let rest for a few minutes before repeating the process.
  4. Put the donuts on two floured baking sheets so that there is plenty of room between each one. Cover with a kitchen towel, and let rise in a warm place until they are slightly puffed up and delicate, about 45 minutes. If your kitchen isn’t warm, heat the oven to 200 at the beginning of this step, then turn off the heat, put the baking sheets in the oven and leave the door ajar.
  5. About 15 minutes before the donuts are done rising, put the oil in a heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven over medium heat, and heat it to 375. Meanwhile, line cooling racks, baking sheets or plates with paper towels.
  6. Carefully add the donuts to the oil, a few at a time. If they’re too delicate to pick up with your fingers (they may be this way only if you rose them in the oven), use a metal spatula to pick them up and slide them into the oil. It’s O.K. if they deflate a bit; they’ll puff back up as they fry. When the bottoms are deep golden, after 45 seconds to a minute, use a slotted spoon to flip; cook until they’re deep golden all over. Transfer the donuts to the prepared plates or racks, and repeat with the rest of the dough, adjusting the heat as needed to keep the oil at 375.
Dough after proofing. Ready to be rolled out and cut into donuts.

  • 1 ¾ cups powdered (icing) sugar (fresh if possible) (sifted)
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (sifted)
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  1. For the glaze, sift your 3/4 cup powdered sugar together with your 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, 1/4 cup milk and 1 teaspoon vanilla until smooth. Dip the tops of the mostly cooled donuts in the glaze, and let it harden on a rack.

  •  cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  •  a pinch of salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups cream
  • 2 tablespoons softened butter
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  1. Combine 2/3 cup sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, 2 tablespoons cornstarch and a pinch of salt in a small saucepan. Over medium heat, whisk in 2 eggs and 2 cups cream. Continue cooking, whisking almost constantly, until the mixture just begins to boil and thickens, about 10 minutes. Adjust the heat so the mixture bubbles gently; cook until it coats the back of a spoon. Stir in 2 tablespoons softened butter and 2 teaspoons vanilla. Strain through your sifter or sieve, and cool to room temperature before using.
  2. To fill the donuts with the pastry cream, insert the tip of a pastry bag filled with cream into the side or bottom of the donut, and squeeze, moving the tip around lightly to fill all of the air pockets.

Travel Essentials

We recently returned from a weekend trip to NYC. We drove to Toronto, then took a one-hour flight to New York. It was a quick trip but it was so much fun! These are a few items that we were so thankful for during our trip!

Firstly, we just started using our Fawn Design diaper bag and I have never owned a diaper bag that was so user friendly! It’s big, with so many compartments and can be used as a backpack or as a bag. The stroller hooks are perfect and hook on and off the bag easily. Plus it is so beautiful! You can buy it here.

These Aloe and Green Tea Face and Body wipes by J.R. Watkins smell and feel so incredible! It’s so nice after a being in the airport or on a flight to have something hydrating and refreshing to wipe your hands and face with! They also offer home care wipes as well as a men’s line and the ingredients are 98% natural! These are now a staple in our bag. You can buy them here.

I love L’occitanes products, and their products are all I use for my daily skincare routine. This Immortelle Precious Face Essential Mist is great for hydrating and toning on the go. It stays in my bag at all times! You can buy it here.

Lastly, we brought our travel sound machine by Dream Egg and used it every day and night. It has a battery backup that charged during the night while we were sleeping and then lasts 10-hours on one charge! It was fantastic in the hotel for helping drown out the never-ending New York noise and we hung it to the troller and used it on the go everyday for Sullivan’s naps. This sleep sound machine has 24 sounds, including 7 White Noise, 7 Fan Sounds, and 10 Nature sounds. Once we turned on the sound machine he fell asleep within ten minutes and had a 2+ hour nap each day. Thats a huge win on vacation in my opinion! You can buy it here.

Also huge thanks to Lynette from Serene Sleep Solutions for all of her tips for sleeping/napping while away on vacations. Her insight and experience as a Sleep Consultant allowed her to create a plan for us to assist in making the away-from-home experience as seamless as possible. Thanks Lynette!
